‘NOSH: Bite-Size Adventures’ Branding

I LOVE DEVELOPING A FULL BRAND IDENTITY AND GRAPHICS PACKAGE FOR PROJECTS AND THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I EVER ATTEMPTED TO DO SO FOR A CHILDREN’S’ TV SHOW.

Nosh is a show for kids, hosted by kids. The hosts show kids at home how to cook simple, delicious recipes, from spaghetti to chicken pot pie to pizza. In each episode, the hosts delve deeper into the history behind their favorite foods. Through the magic of time travel, they teleport through time and space to better understand the origins of the recipes they’re creating.

I had never before done any kind of children’s design so I was excited and intimidated. Since the show is in the pilot stage, I needed to make sure it didn’t look like anything that was already out there in the world of children’s programming. So, step 1 was to watch a large amount of children’s television. Since I don’t have children, I’ll admit it was kind of a weird way to spend my evenings.

I spent months developing, ditching and re-developing logo designs for the show. My design process has always been to start with the logo because it influences the design of everything else. But this time I was hitting a wall. Repeatedly. So I decided to change my process. I set aside logo development and skipped ahead to building the show open. I knew I wanted various shots of different foods falling and rotating over footage, so I started modeling the various vegetables that I needed to animate. That’s when I finally had my light bulb design moment. Looking at the simple, low polygon, geometric pepper I was modeling I thought, ‘if I can see a pepper in these simple shapes, so can kids!’ So I decided to experiment with combining the flat geometric style of character animation with a low-poly 3D world and Nosh: Bite-Size Adventures was finally born.

This was definitely a labor of love. But I’m very pleased with the results and proud that I was able to step outside of my comfort zone and tackle and design project/style that I never have before.
